| "The
ACLU is the most dangerous organization in America. They're a
front for communists and are constantly, relentlessly defending the
rights of criminals, perverts, and foreign elements to overrun our
streets. They come to the defense of any group of sexual deviants
while we the people are asked to put up with their traitorous,
un-American crap." |
The ACLU: Why Does Everybody Hate 'em?
The
ACLU is virtually designed to piss you off.
They advocate Godlessness just as strongly as they defend the American Nazi
Party. Who are these nut cases?
You've
got to admit, the ACLU is pretty clear about who they are... and they don't shy
away from a fight. They can be rabid -- they stick to their principles and almost never do the expedient
thing. Since the ACLU is all lawyers, they do a crummy job of marketing and
playing games with your perceptions. They are also completely vulnerable to optics.
So, it's easy to paint them as as communist-loving, anti-decency,
anti-American. The irony runs pretty deep, since they're defending the
core values of the Constitution. In the words of Oliver Wendel Holmes,
"Being
for free speech is easy when you agree with the other fellow. But push
comes to shove when you're defending the free speech rights of a guy whose
views make you sick to your stomach."
Conservatives and religious zealots hate the ACLU like almost no other
organization, as they "attempt to reform American society according to the
wisdom of liberalism." The rhetoric is strong, but most of it is
opinion that doesn't have a lot
of current facts behind it. Don't swallow this propaganda whole.
The
ACLU is a non-profit organization that, at its best, spends time
defending and strengthening the constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights...which
includes protecting US citizens from persecution for beliefs (Muslim), political stands
(anti-torture),
unreasonable search and seizure (criminals), or sexual deviation (NAMBLA).
